Eggplant

A member of the nightshade family, eggplant is an annual from South America. It istherefore not cold hardy and takes a long time to reach maturity. Fruits may be elongated or globeshaped and they are usually dark purple. White fruited varieties are available and often promoted as“egg trees”. Varieties: Italian, Graffiti, Sicilian, White.

Elderberries

Elderberries have long been known as very beneficial plants to have growing in yourgarden. They are an excellent permaculture forest garden plant. The flowers, berries, leaves, stems, andbranches all have uses in the home, kitchen, apothecary, or garden. There are two main varieties of elderberry that are best for growing:Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra), which is native to Europe, but has naturalized in much of Asia andNorth America. Another very similar species of black elderberry is the American Elderberry (Sambucuscanadensis), which is native to eastern North America. Blue Elderberry (Sambucus nigra ssp. cerulea), which is native to western North America.

Endive

Endive (Chicory, Belgian Endive) is a plants that have a bitter, buttery taste and are usedin ornamental gardens and as salad greens. The lettuce-like plants produce bright heads that go to seedor bolt easily in hot weather. Endive thrives in cooler temperatures and requires ample moisture to stayhealthy. Varieties: Bossa, Coral, Coronet, D’anjou, Damsel.

Fennel

All parts of this vegetable are edible with an interesting licorice-like flavor, (member of thecarrot family).

Fenugreek is used as a herb (dried or fresh leaves), spice (seeds), and vegetable(fresh leaves, sprouts, microgreens). The seeds are cuboid-shaped and yellow to amber-colored.This annual herb has use in traditional medicine. Its native habitat includes uncultivatedground, the edges of fields and dry grassland. The flowers resemble a butterfly. The consumableparts of fenugreek (both the leaf and seed) come from the stem portion of the plant. It has alovely aroma similar to clover, a close relative, and vanilla. This annual herb has uses in medicine so caution and do research.

Feverfew

Feverfew is an aromatic, flowering herb and is an easy-to-grow perennial plant. It isoften mistaken for a weed because of how easily it spreads after taking hold. This plant (Tanacetumparthenium) is actually a species of chrysanthemum that has been grown in herb and medicinal gardens for centuries.

Fig Tree

A bush or small tree, from 1 metre (3 feet) to 10 to 12 metres (33 to 39 feet) high, with broad, rough, deciduous leaves that are deeply lobed or sometimes nearly entire. The leaves and stems exude a white latex when broken. The fig has been cultivated for thousands of years. Fig fruits are borne singly or in pairs above the scars of fallen leaves or in axils of leaves of the presentseason. Frankincense

Frankincense can be grown from seed or cuttings but is most commonly harvested from the bark of the frankincense tree. Frankincense is an aromatic resin (driedsap) obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia in the family Burseraceae. There are several species of Boswellia that produce true frankincense: Boswellia sacra, B. frereana, B. serrata, and B. papyrifera. Resin from each is available in various grades, which depend on the time of harvesting. The resin is hand-sorted for quality. They are short, gnarled, knotty trees growing under the harshest desert conditions.

How to Grow Soil

Dirt is not the same as soil. Simply put, dirt is soil without any life. It is sterile. Dirt is ‘dead’. It contains no biology or non in a living state. Dirt is a mixture of minerals, sand, silt and clay. Sand particles are the largest. Silt are smaller yet and clay is even smaller. Sand will allow water to easily pass through it. Silt will allow water to pass through, but slower than sand. Clay, depending on the layering and the quantity, will block water. It is why clay pots are used to store water
